Well, the chances of your apps that work in 98SE also working in XP are VERY
good, unless of course you're referring to something that's very old... old as
in back to the Win95 days. But, anything that was made for Windows 98 should
work. I've had XP pretty much since its been out, and I think I've only found
two programs that didn't work right... one was a phone answering machine
program that attaches to special hardware and one was for a DOS game.
If 98SE works good for you, there's definitely no need for change. But, if you
want to try a new look and slightly different feel and experience, then I think
XP is definitely the way to go. In my opinion, I think its a much more
user-friendly OS, ESPECIALLY (and I emphasize that) the installation process.
Anyone that has installed both 98SE and XP can tell you how much easier it is
to install the latter... both on the instructions, stability AND, most
importantly, driver support.
The OS itself is much more stable, and if you into security (as most home-users
are usually NOT into) then you have the extra added security that the NT file
system brings.
If you have names of specific programs or apps, some of us here may be able to
tell you if it'll work in XP. Further, keep in mind that MS support for
anything prior to XP will soon completely cease, so that's another inducement
to upgrade.
Of course, it boils down to preference. I like both 98 and XP. You need to see
what you'd be most comfortable with.
