For Firefox (which doesn't care what viewer you use for PDF files), I 
installed an extension called PDF Download.  It gives me full control over 
whether a PDF file is opened within the browser or is downloaded to my hard 
drive instead.  No more guessing or having it do the opposite of what you 
actualy want.     :)
