Don, Sleep modes do not affect that at all. What does affect it is the mode that the devices are in at the time. In Device Manager, open the properties for the device in question and check the Policies tab. The top option will allow for quick removal any time that a file is not actually being written to or read from the device. The second option sets up caching for the device which will increase its performance, but also dictate that you "unmount" it before disconnection.
