Whoa.....lets step back and take a deep breath <G>

Here are some facts, and observations.........

No connection to the internet is absolutely safe.

No software will stop 100% of the threats to a computer.

High speed connections (ADSL, DSL, cable, etc.) so far exceed the
experience of dialup that anyone who can afford it SHOULD use it.

A high speed connection should be utilized with proper safeguards.
These safeguards include a good AV software that's kept up-to-date, a
DSL switch, a firewall software, and proper use of software to remove
  "spyware", etc.

Think of the experience of "safe computing" as being something like
"safe sex", it's not hard to practice, it's essential, and the
rewards far outweigh the cost/work of practicing safe computing.

The risk of serious hack-attack on a home computer is relatively
small. Most of the problems encountered are annoyances more than
  serious problems.

The fact that the real risk is relatively small DOES NOT mean one
should not protect their computer -- computer owners have a
responsibility to protect their computer to prevent it from being
  used to attack others!!

My advice is to continue on your path and enjoy the experience of
DSL. Obviously you are reading and studying the subject and that's
a GOOD thing. If you have specific questions.....feel free to ask
and we'll do our best to help.
