Roger,
That was one of the questions in your reply that stood out so much that
I couldn't wait to answer it. And then the questions I had to answer before
getting to it caused some inadvertent memory loss and I completely forgot to
type out my thoughts on this one.

The question is a great one because it's not something that is
considered by most. Well, the answer is the primary reason why it's not
normally considered. Setting up an OS on an external drive requires a host
computer primarily for its CPU, RAM and ability to actually 'talk' with the
external. Unfortunately, this also means that the OS will automatically
install driver support for all of the hardware in that host system. If you
then take the external and try to run it on a system with a different set of
hardware, the OS will most likely crash and burn attempting to rectify the
differences. Therefore, the only way this can work is if all of the systems
involved share the same exact hardware and even then, although it's an
extremely rare occurrence, the OS may still have some difficulties resolving
embedded ID numbers in some of the hardware. This last issue is so rare
that I would have no problem at least trying it if I had two systems built
with the same parts.

However, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that most manufacturers
will build a single model number with the same specs using parts from
several device makers. For instance, a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop will have
one of nine different DVD+/-RW drives installed before it leaves the
factory. This is simply the result of the manufacturer making sure that
they never have a problem with stock availability and all of them follow a
similar procedure when choosing suppliers. All of the nine drives they
would use for this particular laptop model are 8X, so they figure the
customer shouldn't be at all concerned with who made the drive they receive.
However, if you try this experiment with two of these laptops and they are
using two different DVD drives, it could pose a problem. I'm not saying it
will, but it certainly could.

Peace,
G
