Hi, I am still helping my son who is disabled, to have a working computer from a donated machine. W95b, 150 MHz, 32 Ram, 4. He lives about 3 hrs from us, so I was able to borrow a "loaner" for him to use while I attempt to fix up this one. Both of us are on very limited incomes or I would get him a better one! LOL Here is the problem, he had trouble with the CD-ROM not recognizing that a CD was present, didn't matter if it was audio or whatever. A friend came over to his apt. to help out. When he left not only did it still not work but now there were 2 drive letters for the CD-ROM. My son also said the person attempted to put in another CD-ROM and it still wouldn't work. I wasn't there, so I am not sure what really happened or didn't happen. When my son called me long distance, I told him to go to Device Manager and remove both CD-ROMs and let Windows find the real one when it rebooted. (BTW, if it matters the one installed is a Goldstar CD-ROM CRD-8160B. Got that info from Aida. Then I got a message from him saying that he had removed the CD Controller! instead of the CD-ROM. EEK...! He said well, "that's where the yellow exclamation was". When I got the computer here, I put Aida on it to see what was actually there. I don't see a CD Controller card listed now. But, maybe I don't know exactly what I am looking for. You DO have to have a controller for it, right? Now how will I know what kind he has...if he has one or if he needs one. I removed the case and made sure that the power and ribbon cable were both seated well. But, although it recognizes that there is a CD-ROM drive, when you put any kind of CD in you get the message that the drive is not ready (retry) (cancel). Would it recognize that there was one if it didn't have the controller installed? I would like to reformat and put this system to rights again, but of course, without the CD-ROM working I cannot proceed. I am thinking that maybe the CD-ROM is fried and may need a new one. OK. BUT, this is a small, really small town. *read=no computer store*. So if I send for one and install it and still have the same problem I have to pay s&h + restock fee. I do have another old one that has a working CD-ROM drive but is a different speed & brand. Shall I go ahead & remove this one and attempt an installation of it? Hopefully, there will be a way for me to check/test the one currently installed without physically doing this. A friend of mine had CD-ROM troubles with one that was under warranty, when she called tech support they took her into DOS and did some things that showed the drive was OK. But neither she nor I have any clue what it was they did.
