This fall, PAS will be celebrating 70 years. Several PAS members, Mike
Marron, Paul Facuna, Don Boyd, Terri Finch, William Finch, Sam Insana, and
Jenny Weitz have started planning the festivities and we would like you to
join in with your ideas and/or take part in the actual activities.
President Mike wants to devote some time at each event at his house in
Carefree to this planning. Therefore, Saturday June 30th and Tuesday July
3rd and future events at Mike's will involve discussions of the 70 year
event, along with the potluck, lecture, stargazing etc....If you cannot
make the events at Mike's please feel free to respond to this email so we
can have the benefit of your ideas.
It doesn't matter if you have been a member for many years or are a new
member, your input is important.
So far we have come up with the following brainstorming suggestions:
1. We are looking at October 11th, a Thursday late afternoon and evening
at PVCC BMC. Indoor activities would be in the Aquila building and
outdoors would be a telescope star party with a green laser tour of the
constellations on the observation deck.
2. 20 minute lectures or presentations on various subjects like a) basic
astronomy b) meteor studies for the International Meteor Organization c)
Spectroscopy d) Occultation studies for the International Occultation
Timing Association e) beginning astrophotography f) how to use binoculars
at star parties g) meteorite studies h) use of sky quality meters to find
best places to observe j) light pollution problems, etc....
3. We can have an exhibits room for a) Astronomy posters we have collected
over the years b) Astrophotography taken by PAS members c) slideshow of
PAS activities throughout the years d) meteorites on display, etc....
4. History of PAS... Have a 20 minute lecture on PAS over the last 70
years with photos, newspaper articles, magazine articles, minutes,
newsletters, guest speakers list, etc..
5. Honors, Awards, and astronomy achievements of PAS members such as a)
Awards for completing observing projects for the Astronomical League b)
Awards presented to PAS members by PAS c) citizen science projects that
have made significant findings d) PAS members' astrophotography that has
been published, etc....
6. Talks on activities of PAS a) general meetings with guest speakers b)
telescope and bino star parties c) field trips to planetariums d) field
trips to observatories e) socials f) telescope workshops g) meteor shower
observing, etc....
7. A children's activity center where they can draw astronomy objects, do
puzzles, games, connect the dots for constellations, etc...
8. Snacks and drinks available for purchase
9. Publicity of celebration with press releases to TV, Radio, Newspapers,
PVCC both campuses, local high schools, etc....
10. Have a handout or electronic board inside the Aquila Building listing
the above activities
Depending on how many PAS members are willing to attend the Celebration
and volunteer their time to one or more of the activities, we may be able
to do all of the above, even more than the above, or need to scale it down
quite a bit. We can also combine some of the activities.
Be proud of your Astronomy Club and send out your ideas and hopefully
volunteer for at least one of the activities.
We are also working with Loretta Mondragon who has been very helpful. She
found out the construction north of BMC will not start until November. We
may also have PVCC students out there to do STEAM events, hopefully mostly
astronomy related.
Jenny is doing a walk through at the Aquila Building at BMC PVCC Tuesday
July 3rd at 1 pm to see what we have to work with and go over more ideas,.
