Review of July 11 Star Party at Mikes.
The star party at Mike’s on July 11th had five scopes participating. The seeing
was good with nice views of the Milky Way. Everyone seemed to focus on
different objects so we had an opportunity to see a variety things. Of
particular note was Howard Moneta’s view of Saturn. We counted five moons,
which is the most that I’ve had the opportunity to view. Eric Steinberg was
able to show many DSOs, with the view of the Veil Nebula of particular interest.
I was able to find several Messier objects (M4, M22 and M28) that I had not
viewed through my scope previously. I also was able to see NGC 6544, which was
much fainter than the Messier objects even at 338 magnification. In viewing
Saturn, about three hours after Howard, I was only able to see two moons. It
may be because of the aperture difference or it may have been because some of
the moons were behind the planet by then.
