Some of you saw my presentation about Radio Astronomy, and you may
remember the antenna I built in order to receive radio signals from Jupiter
(see article and photo attached). I am finished with it and would like to
pass it along to anyone who may want to use it for the Astronomical
League’s Radio Astronomy Observing Program, or just for fun.
It’s a receive only antenna with a 3 square foot metal back plane and a
loop of wire on 12” standoffs. To use it you will need a communications
receiver that covers 15 MHz through 30 MHz (at least), and some 50 ohm
coaxial cable to connect the radio to the antenna. Also have a look at
radiosky.com for lots of detail on this subject and some useful
software that predicts when it’s best to listen.
