thanks, Sam. yes, I already tell people about the appropriate time. i.e. I always clarify to people that for all meteor showers, viewing after 2 am is best because then we are on the "forward" side of the Earth.

and I know the peak is supposed to be tonight, but I understand from his question that tonight he will not be in this area, so he is asking about the weekend, even if it's after the peak.

I realize he can't come to Mike's house. the question is (since apparently he is not here with a group that can accompany him) is whether there is a place that I can recommend that is not too far, not too light polluted (even if it isn't a really really dark sky site), and is safe for a tourist to go to alone.

Leah, He should observe from 1 am to 4 am tomorrow (Friday) morning, when the moon is not in the way and there will be the most meteors per hour. If he wants to see it Saturday early morning he needs to observe after 2 am, once the moon has set but there may not be as many meteors as early Friday morning.
He should try a dark spot northeast of the valley. He can't do Mike's place, since it is for PAS members only. I would suggest driving northeast of Phoenix, like on the road to Payson, and pull off the road and take a look for a few hours. The turnoff to Saguaro lake might be best. That should be less than an hour from the Biltmore. But he should not go alone. Take care, Sam

Yeah. Drive north about three hundred miles.

    Hi -
I will be staying at the Arizona Biltmore this weekend and short of
sneaking onto their golf course at night, I'd like a recommendation on
somewhere not too far outside the city where I could go to watch the show.

    Any thoughts?

    Thank you!

    -Cliff
