Can you save off the data files that you want and then do a fresh OS X
install?
If you aren't already, I'd highly recommend using Time Machine to back up
your files to an external drive. They cost ~$100 and Time Machine is very
well done--it works reasonably right out of the box. My backups have saved
my butt a couple times now.

Folks -
I am still running OSX 10.9.5 (Mavericks) on my Mac. I used to run
only Firefox in as safe a mode as possible. However lately I've been using
Safari - which I have configured with looser security for when I *have* to
use cookies and so forth such as watching MLB.tv and accessing some other
websites.
It seems that I have been inflicted with some sort of virus. I
contacted Apple support as instructed and got a long intro including
sharing my screen to see active processes that needed to be killed. All
fine so far. Ultimately I was given the choice of taking my Mac into the
shop or having it cleaned remotely by apple support - which meant extending
my warranty on a box I bought in 2011. The cheapest avaiable option was
for something like $295 (online) with options ranging up to $695 (shop.)
Eff that!!
I'd like to try cleaning it myself but need to learn a bit more. Have
any of you experienced this? I am considering first upgrading to the
latest release of MacOS. Is that advisable given the current state of my
box? Ordinarily I'd consider buying a new box but that's not currently a
possibility. How about buying an external firewall for my in-house
network? I used to have one but it died and I never replaced it.
Unhappily,
