We are on the road to Zimbabwe regardless. Mitt Romney just threw out an idea
for another trillion or so--easing our way forward into UBI. We are going to
hit the wall a long time before we reach 1B people.

Subject: [pa64] Immigration
There are several existential issues on the political agenda of both parties,
and this is one. It has been obvious to objective observers that rate of
immigration, legal and otherwise, over the past forty years would eventually be
unsustainable, including stretching various types of resources to the breaking
point. Exhibit A: hospitals in Los Angeles in December had to turn away
ambulances and use gift shops as makeshift treatment rooms as a result of covid
cases. That was not widely reported, but its connection to immigration,
particularly illegal immigration, should be obvious. Further, the
unavailability of covid vaccine for many high-risk elderly is directly
attributable to the 61 million immigrants and their children currently in the
county by one reliable estimate, which could be understated. Future crises,
including massive unemployment as AI, robotics and other technology accelerates
as well as fresh water shortages throughout high population density areas are
on the horizon. And yet, immigration has become a combination of: (1) a
quasi-religious issue, particularly for non-whites, who whether they admit or
are even conscious of it, see it as a way to marginalize the white population
of the country through dilution; (2) a political issue for the Democratic Party
which understands it is the most effective way to grow and consolidate their
power, and finally (3) a financial issue for corporate America with its
insatiable need for new consumers and, to a lesser extent, cheap labor.
Immigration was the key issue on which Trump was elected, and it's not going
away as an issue, but it looks like a rational approach is not only elusive but
impossible at this point. The last surviving member of our class may well see a
U.S. population of 500 million, and our grandchildren will see a U.S.
population of one billion.
