I just read several articles about the incursion, which all seem to say the
same thing, all of which we probably knew already. This is the only article I
found that describes how this particular incursion is quantitatively greater
than the usual ones, which seem to be a regular thing. I have no idea whether
this escalation of sorts is in itself significant. We have to assume that
everything China does is carefully calculated to achieve some goal. As to HK,
that seems to be a lost cause at this point.

I heard about the incursion into Taiwan airspace and realized I don't know what
happened in Hong Kong. I remember the CCP wanted custody of some
(non-political?) Taiwanese criminal and that set off a problem and then their
were protests and then the HK government was dominated by the mainland. I
missed a step in there.
