Just as a worthless historical review, slaveholders tried hard to keep
families together as it was the best way to prevent run-aways. However, when
they got into debt, it was the government that came in and sold off the slaves
that split up the families. This was not universal however as there were slave
breeders who sold off the young as the prices went up. They didn't want kids
living in the basement I guess. That said, there is good evidence that the
government did most of the family break-ups and it looks like we are still at
it.
