As I feared, what turned up in email didn’t reflect at all how detailed the
original images were in the Photos app.
I’ve just installed the MacOS update which adds ProRAW (sorry, I called it
PhotoRAW which isn’t correct!) support to the Photos app and will have another
play this evening, but I suspect for best results I’ll need to edit in ON1, do
my own compression to a point I’m happy (enough) with balance between quality
and file size, and email at full size so the email app doesn’t change anything.
I’m really happy with the format so far, in any case.
Kelly, my understanding is that you need iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro Max for
ProRAW. Better upgrade if you haven’t already! 😉

I installed the iOS update today so I could use Apple’s new PhotoRaw format,
and I was really happy with these photos. I hit the auto-enhance button and
cropped a couple, but other than that they are not edited. I am really happy
with the detail. Not sure that will show through once they are compressed for
email though.
