Have only ever been invited to zoom meetings and never set up any, so I
think I would not be the one to set this up.

Yeah good point about sharing email addresses but I don’t know how else to
do it. As far as I’m aware (and I could be wrong, because I’m not that
familiar with Zoom myself) someone can set up meetings in advance and
notify participants of the details (could just send to the list) so they
can join the meeting without registering for Zoom. But the meeting
organiser has to be there to ‘open’ the room, so to speak. That might be a
bit formal for us? Depending on how committed we want to be to tuning in?
Timing for some of us might be uncertain.
Personally I’m happy to commit to at least one time slot if I am available
and if I know others will be there.
Otherwise I think it’s possible to just call people whenever, but you’d
need some kind of contact details to be able to do that and/or the other
person/people need to be registered with Zoom. I’ve never tried either
option, have only ever been invited to meetings in advance, so someone else
here might have more clue than me.

Okay… Dohn and I have decided to go ahead with our plans to visit the Blue
Mountains, so will have a shortish road trip of around 4 hours during
Christmas Day, but are still flexible and can definitely drop into a Zoom
call briefly (will be on mobile data!) after 8pm… which is morning for
Europe, but early morning or the middle of the night for the US. Tricky! I
think we need a table with people’s availability or semi-commitment to tune
in, ’translated’ into different time zones, along with whatever email
people want to use for Zoom invites. That way folks can connect with who
they want at convenient times. While the removal of the Zoom free time
limit is great, it’s not like we can keep an empty room open, so we’ll need
contact details.
I’m working right up to tomorrow (Christmas Eve) too, though I hope to
finish at lunch time then hit the shops and battle the madding crowds for
what we need to take away. So if someone else wants to sort this out please
do!
Otherwise I’ll probably just resort to putting a table in an email and
people can add themselves and hit reply. Not ideal, but I don’t have time
to set up anything better at the moment.

It says you have the most amount of success in such meetings when people
have something to DO rather than just stare at each other on the screen. I
guess such a meeting does have the potential to be awkward. It’s not like
those of us spending Christmas alone can even sit down together virtually
to our Christmas meal given the massive time zone differences.
And because you get a maximum of 40 mins free on Zoom before having to
initiate a new call, so it’s not like a ‘room’ where people can drop in and
out of at will, it honestly might be better to just arrange to catch up by
Zoom individually at mutually suitable times.
What are everyone’s thoughts?
