Ps i did a chook stir fry and m arinated chicken thighes. Was weird not frying

Our siblings dinner happened on Saturday night and there was just so much food!
Mostly slaved over by my brother in law. Booze was mainly sakes n an
underwhelming rioja.
We added a shot of cordon blue cognac into that wonderful soup too!

Tomorrow, Saturday, will be the first of our reunion dinners over the next 3
days when I join my
siblings for our last meal of the year together.
My brother in law just sent me a pic of the duck he marinated and air-dried and
is going to
"Gor Yow" (literally, pass through oil) or continuously pour hot oil over to
crisp the skin
before he stuffs it with glutinous rice and lots of traditional goodies, and
braises it.
I told him I am so glad my sister married him - cos I am far too lazy to do all
that.
He is also making a marvelously rich soup called "Buddha Jumps over the Will"
and some veg
with Sea Cucumbers and Mushrooms, and a rich flavoured rice with preserved duck
and pork -
all traditional Chinese New Year dishes.
My brother is contributing braised pork ribs - one of our family faves.
My contribution will be jellyfish and cucumbers marinated in chili oil as one
of the appetizers,
steamed red grouper (fish in Chinese also sounds like abundance and must be
served whole
for the meal - there will be fish eyes, Vicki!), fried sea-prawns (prawns in
Chinese is "Har"
which sounds like laughter, so that is a must too), and stir fried greens (my
sister told me
not to enrich it with the traditional mushrooms/abalones cos we just need
something simple
as a counterpoint to the richness of the other dishes).
Will also bring lots of fruit. Have not decided if I should prepare any
dessert.
On Sunday we are "cheating" by not cooking, but ordering from a fave "zichar"
shop (a casual
eatery serving rough and ready foods such as fried noodles and deep friend
chicken wings etc) and
bringing that to eat with an elderly aunt and uncle whose daughter is not in
Singapore.
They usually join us for our reunion dinners but cannot this year due to Covid
Restrictions -
we can only have up to 5 guests in any household which is a bummer).
Monday is the "real" night for reunion dinners (the last night before the
Chinese New Year on 1 Feb) and
since we have already eaten lots of rich Chinese food for 2 nights in a row, I
am still thinking what to serve.
As we have already eaten with extended family, we extended an invitation to
friends who do not
have reunions to go to. For a change of scenery (and menu) my husband asked
Muslim friends
to join us so I have to rejig some recipes to exclude pork which is a
traditional ingredient for CNY dishes.
Will definitely be curing some salmon (using oranges and coriander and some
lemongrass in the cure)
and using it in a Chinese New Year Salad called "Yue Sang" which we toss for
good luck and prosperity.
Dressing includes plum sauce, orange juice, mustard and sesame oil.
I intend to serve a few Chinese style small eats/tapas and then end with a
vegetable-mushroom-fish maw soup
and a mushroom-chestnut-abalone flavoured rice.
Have readied loose clothing to be worn for the next few days.
