Hi Vicki
Yes the tropics are a whole next creature level. Too many bugs for my
liking….way too humid
Nice pics ☺

Hi Steve,
I suppose when a lizard is kept on its own, like Morrie is, its harder to tell
about its, er, relationship status haha!
When we lived in our FNQ rainforest we had Eastern small-eye snakes in the
house. They looked like small red-bellied blacks at first glance, but while
venomous they are not dangerous – they’ll run away rather than attack. Dohn
would sweep them out the door and even trod on one once… and I have a photo I
took of one behind the coffee machine – at first glance it looked just like the
black power cable.
Another time, I swear I was out of the kitchen less than an hour and found this
on my return:
[cid:image001.jpg@01D79CB0.28A750F0]
Tell ya what, though, after we moved back to Perth it took me many months to
stop looking out for snakes when I turned the light on at night… you always
watched where you put your feet!
We also had pythons outside of course. I think this is a spotted python:
[cid:image002.jpg@01D79CB0.28A750F0]
Apparently there was an amethystine python living down by the river but we
never saw it. Would have been cool! They are absolutely huge. We had oodles of
tree snakes (commonly called night tigers) of course – we were warned to check
for them under sheets and blankets at night! And one day I was rapt to go
outside and see this little northern dwarf crowned snake – you can see how tiny
it is compared with the paving bricks:
[cid:image003.jpg@01D79CB0.28A750F0]
We had house geckos of course, and one day found this pretty Northern
Leaf-Tailed Gecko on the wall.
[cid:image004.jpg@01D79CB0.28A750F0]
We also shared a house with some quite large (about 18 inches I guess?)
monitors/lizards that lived in the roof. We used to call them ’the removalists’
because they made such a racket it sounded like people shifting furniture.
Dohn’s son and his then-girlfriend came to stay, and she was a bit freaked by
the ‘wildlife’ in the house. One day when I was at the mine with Dohn, he got a
call from his son who said that while he was making a coffee one of the
monitors had fallen onto the kitchen floor from above and ran off, and then a
second one landed and ran off too, and Geri had raced upstairs and refused to
come down again. When we got home later that day the stairs were barricaded. I
will never forget! I thought it was hilarious, but poor Geri didn’t.
Not much in the way of reptilian wildlife where we are now.
Vicki. :-)

Hi Vicki
The lost foot started as some lost toes, and now the foot she lost when
reappeared from hibernation.
She was at the firepit before she moved back in her usual digs by the pool area
(nice and sunny).
Miss Lizzie is definitely a she, and each year we look forward to the battles,
in full HD, usually in front of that window. “Godzilla” is still the champ, but
there are always a few young punks to take on the big fella.
And then the two disappear for a while, and she pops back around to her spot
later.
There have been baby blue tongues around, but these are wild lizards (actually
skinks) who do their own thing and come and go as they please.
There also Red Bellied Black snakes that come and go, but they are not so
welcome, albeit beautiful colours in their own way. We did have a 5 foot long
Diamond Python (or maybe a Carpet Python) that was once laying along the top of
our fence near the Alfresco eating area. Ha ha… Jen and FIL were sitting at the
table oblivious to said python about 2metres away eating their lunch. I walks
out, sees the snake and Says “Wow, that’s a big snake on the fence”. They must
have jumped 10 foot in the air to move away. Later, the Python got sick of the
attention and casually stretched out and went into a hole in the neighbours
wall of their house! I was a little sad to see WIRES relocate the Python as I
think they are quite beautiful, and keep away rodents.
Cheers

Ahhh cute, Steve! Poor thing losing a foot, though. :-(
At work I have found myself in the position of writing a series of lockdown
stories about the billeted-out Questacon blue tongue lizard, Morrie. (No one is
really sure if Morrie is a boy or a girl so Morrie gets called Morrie a lot,
rather than ‘him’ or ’they’ ha ha.) Morrie has been joining the kids of the
billet household doing remote learning, and also relaxing outside eating snails
(see! This IS about food!) and just lounging around in the grass. There’s also
a baby blue tongue lizard there, who isn’t keen on Morrie but there ya go,
Morrie is a cool customer and mostly ignores the youngster, occasionally
practicing the old side-eye glare. (I was supplied with several cute photos to
back it up haha.)

Hi Vicki and Kelly
Yes – very fun times around the fire. .some Vino.. some food.. some tunes,
plenty more wood to add if not hot enough. Hope to fit a few more in before the
weather heats up too much.
It’s turning cold again tonight so will finish off the last of the soup from
the freezer as days will heat up soon after that. I know spring is pretty much
here as our resident “groundhog” Miss Lizzie is back waiting for boy blue
tongues to come and fight for her honour, and checking out what we are doing
through the window…
Poor girl has lost a foot but still manages to get around OK.
Cheers

Thanks Steve,
Although suspect it will be a while before we can leave out little police state.
I did buy some Comte yesterday at my favourite deli, so will find something to
go with it.

Hi Julia,
We ate it quite a bit when we were in London, but only ever on a cheese plate.
I used to buy a lot of my cheese from Neils Yard at Borough Market, which was
great. There is a shop in Enmore which sells my favourite UK cheese, Stinking
Bishop, but I keep forgetting to go in ☹
I have seen Comte here, but haven’t yet bought any. As far as I am aware you
can’t make cheese here from raw milk, it has be to be pasteurized.

Hello all,
Have been back in the UK for a week and on day 8 of isolation.Fortunately I
escaped the massive heatwave in Spain where temps are in the 40c plus
range.😩50cin Granada😩
I did a big online food shop as now have got my appetite back and taking more
of an interest in cooking. I had been seeing food programs on tv especially my
favourite chef, James Martin, and Comte cheese was mentioned several times.
Bought some as never had it and it is lovely on crackers. Googled it and came
up with the link below. Very interesting and links to heaps of recipes. Can see
I will be trying quite a few.
Have any of you tried this cheese and if so apart from eating off a cheese
board what have you made with it?
