Community Contribution Program Recipients Announced

Three local programs working to make East Tennessee a healthier place to live
have been awarded community grant funding from the Covenant Health Knoxville
Marathon and the Knoxville Track Club.
The total amount of grant funding awarded is $12,750. Marathon Director Jason
Altman announced that East Tennessee Children's Hospital will receive $6,250
for the Knoxville Area Coalition on Childhood Obesity's iRun program, Girls on
the Run of Greater Knoxville will receive $5,000, and Keep Knoxville Beautiful
has been awarded $1,500.
"For 10 years the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon has served as East
Tennessee's premier event for runners, as well as a healthy and inspiring
opportunity for individuals and families of all fitness levels," Altman said.
"We are proud that what happens during the marathon weekend will continue to
benefit our community."
This past June, the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon announced a new grant
program in which awarded funds will promote healthy living in East Tennessee.
The Community Contributions Program was developed to provide an opportunity for
multiple organizations to apply for funding for their programs. Thirty-six
proposals were received in response to the announcement.
Although this is the first year for the Community Contribution Program, the
Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon and the Knoxville Track Club have a
long-standing history of reinvesting in the community. From 2005 - 2014,
$113,350 has been contributed to support projects such as mile markers for
local city and county greenways, land acquisition and building trails in South
Knoxville's Urban Wilderness, and a golf cart to patrol and clean the
greenways. An additional $17,831 has been given to the Patricia Neal
Rehabilitation Center Innovative Recreation Cooperative, which encourages
people with disabilities to pursue leisure and sports activities including hand
cycling, which is one of the races in the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon.

Less than a month until the Inaugural Farragut 13.1, 5K, and Kids Mile!
The Knoxville Track Club is excited to host the first ever Farragut 13.1, 5K,
and Kids Mile on Saturday, November 1.
The course will begin and finish at Farragut High School. It is a very scenic
course showcasing some of the most beautiful farms and homes in Knox County, as
well as breathtaking views of Turkey Creek. Surprisingly, for our area, this
is not a hilly course, measuring less than 500' of gain. It's a great mix of
flat the first few miles, then some nice rolling hills, before becoming pretty
flat for the last several miles. Perfect for runners new to half marathons,
and veterans alike.

Featured Race - Pilot Flying J CrossKnox 15K on October

This year's CrossKnox race, starting at 8am on October 12, is a point to point
race showcasing Knoxville's Greenway System. The race was originally a 15k but
was run in 2010 as a 10 Miler in celebration of running it on 10.10.10, and
stayed that way for a couple years before reverting to the 15k distance for
2013. Race day registration will be at Bearden Elementary on Kingston Pike,
after which buses will take runners to the start at Morningside Park. First bus
leaves at 6:30 and the last at 7:30. Postrace refreshments, awards, and other
activities will be at Bearden Elementary.
