My post was cut short so I'm reposting:

Lately I've been hearing about watering orchids, especially
Phalaenopsis with ice cubes. There is even a website calling them
"Ice Orchids" and recommending putting ice cubes in the pot instead
of watering. This practice is not a good substitute for thorough
watering as the quantity of slowly dripping water is not enough for
the plant and parts of the mix remain dry. Does it make sense that a
tropical plant would want ice cold water on its roots or leaves? How
many Phalaenopsis grow on ice flows in the Arctic ?
Now it appears that one of the largest chain stores is putting
these kinds of instructions on their tags and spreading this fallacy
even more. Does anyone have any experience with ice cube watering
other than possibly on cool growing species, such as Masdevallias or
Cymbidiums in warm climates?
