I bought the last Slow Stick that Paul had. Here is what I ordered from
Aloft...
You can get cheaper servos, but these are an improvement from the super
cheaper Emax that cost about 5 bucks.. The plane takes off in about 4
feet. If there is no wind, I can get about 8 minutes flying at my slow
speed. The majority of the expense is in the battery. Also, you will have
to drill out the cheap props. But they work, and you will probably need
more than one.

I'd say buy the kit.
The current power pack for the kit uses a drone motor with 4-blade prop,
and the Kv may be too high for the 8" two-blade props most of us use. So
you might want to look for a different motor. I recently bought a Dualsky
ECO 2312C-V2 1500kv motor (

for my EStang and the same motor would be appropriate for the Slow Stick.
You can get 9g servos pretty cheap. Hobby King has HXT900 9g servos for
only $3.50! (

You'll need at least two, four if you want to use ailerons.
You only need a 4 channel receiver. If you have a Spektrum transmitter,
the AR410 (

$35) will work. If you are flying FrSky, an Archer SR6 (ACCESS protocol,

do. The Rx4R is upgradeable to ACCESS.
You'll also need an ESC. The current capability will depend on the
battery, motor, and especially the prop that you plan to use. I'm using an
Avios ESC from Hobby King that I had on hand from a previous plane.
