I have had really good luck with my Taranis. I have heard of problems
with the multi-protocol module. You might want to check out the DSMP
module from Lemon RC. I don't own any planes with a Spektrum receiver, or
I could tell you if it worked for me or not. However, since the module is
marketed for Spektrum hardware only, I think the odds of it working are
pretty good. For $28 bucks, it seems like a low risk option.
I also own the USB dongle for use with a flight simulator and it works fine
for me. At the first of this year FrSky updated their firmware for the
ACCST transmitter protocol. I only owned a couple of stabilized receivers

I have found it makes a good controller for simulation on my laptop,
because it supports a USB cable. I have the RF dongle, too, but I prefer
to use the USB cable.
I bought the X9D+ because FrSky records the transmitter stick inputs in
its telemetry stream as well as the sensors on the plane. Until recently
Spektrum telemetry only recorded the airplane measurands. That meant one
could know what the plane did, but one had no idea why it did what it did!
The new NX transmitters from Spektrum record transmitter variables, too.
Something to think about if you are considering a transmitter upgrade.
