It's fairly painless. As John says, just understand and follow the instructions. Perform the upgrade on a test database first. Create a new one if you need to, you need to ensure that you already know how to smoothly go through the upgrade. We've installed several apps and databases here for the sole purpose of upgrading them, so that we know we can do it on production without a problem. It will be time well spent.
