Hmm, I'd been wondering that since I do have trace files since, but it seems
that May is a long time ago! Maybe nothing is really wrong?

I think stale or alert logs that contain nothing for days at a time is not
uncommon on ASM.
This is from a heavily used production environment

-rw-r----- 1 oracle dba 38 Jul 2 10:00 alert_+ASM1.log.5.gz
-rw-r----- 1 oracle dba 2870 Jul 15 01:58 alert_+ASM1.log.4.gz
-rw-r----- 1 oracle dba 38 Jul 17 10:00 alert_+ASM1.log.3.gz
-rw-r----- 1 oracle dba 38 Jul 29 10:00 alert_+ASM1.log.2.gz
-rw-r----- 1 oracle dba 3942 Aug 7 09:56 alert_+ASM1.log.1.gz
-rw-r----- 1 oracle dba 0 Aug 13 10:00 alert_+ASM1.log

The log was switched on 7th Aug and nothing has been written to the file since.

John
