RMAN doesn't care whether the backup is cold or hot. There is no difference.
In fact, to do a cold backup, you have to mount the database in RMAN, so it
really isn't COLD. It is luke warm.

But does this not imply that the level 0 back and incremental backup have to be
the same? All cold backups or all hot or on-line backups?

Yes, does it automatically, no action on your side needed. Basically a restore
of a datafile or the database will restore the last cold backup. The recover
command will then apply incremental backups as possible and then archive redo
to complete the action.

Does this make sense:

Incremental backups for database every day (based on block change tracking
approach - new in 10G). Archivelogs are backed up everyday. Full cold backup
on the weekend. Recovery using previous cold backup and applying incremental
backups & archivelogs.

I am reading this in a doc given to me.

Can you apply an incremental backup ( level 1 or 2 ) taken during the week to a
cold backup taken on Sunday?

Can the BCT feature be used with a cold backup?

thanks.
