...And my point is that even if your system consistently reports the same "wait
events" being your dominant response time consumers, it doesn't mean that these
wait events are the problem for the specific business task you're hoping to
make faster. See
http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/network/excerpt/optimizing_oracle_chap12/ for a
real-life example.

In your case, I jumped all over the parsing and latching issues (actually, I
jumped on the parsing issue; I only guessed the latching issue) because it's a
subject I'm interested in. But prioritizing what you tune first based on what
you're interested in, or what you guess the problem probably is, ...that's no
way to do it. You don't need to guess, because you can know. If you base your
diagnosis on AWR/Statspack, then there's still an element of guessing involved.
...As I think you'll understand if you read the example I provided.

Just to clarify, I’m not saying that your AWR reports
are misleading you or that AWR/Statspack reports are “bad” in general – I use
them regularly myself and often find them to be very useful.  They might even
be pointing you in the right direction here.  I was simply trying to caution
you that they
can be misleading.  I only skimmed your original post this morning and can’t
remember the specifics and am too busy to review it, but from the quick glance
I gave it, it just looked to me like you
might have been making some invalid assumptions that could be leading you off
track so I was merely recommending how I would approach the issue in general,
not even addressing your main questions, which I believe were about parsing and
latching issues.
