For the record the Long data type was deprecated with the introduction
of the LOB data type in version 8.0, but will probably still be around
when version 11 rolls out the door.

Yes, that's because Oracle doesn't want to change the data dictionary.
They announced the deprecation of the long column in version 9 I think,
may have been 8.1. Its not like you can manipulate a long column.

But, LONG columns are still here:

Oracle uses long columns in data dictionary quite abundantly. My version
is the latest and the greatest:
SQL> select * from v$version;
BANNER
----------------------------------------------------------------
