Thanks Greg, but I have varying values for dbfmbrc even in databases that have the exact same settings for _db_cache_size, sga_target, processes and sessions so there must be some other parameter(s) or something else that also affects it - that's what I'm trying to figure out. This seems like the sort of thing that one of the gurus would've already figured out and documented, but I've looked all over and can't find any explanation - I just checked the index of Jonathan Lewis' Cost-Based Oracle Fundamentals and didn't see it in there either. I'm not basing my actions on any performance data, just trying to implement some "best practices" while things are slow. I understand I'll be introducing plan changes, but the idea is that they're supposed to be changes for the better. I know all too well that isn't always the case, but I figure it's worth a shot and if it causes problems, I can just put the system stats back the way they were before. These databases don't have very high loads or uptime/performance requirements so I can afford to take the risk.
