Perhaps I should have qualified "favorite" with a  ;)

FWIW, I do use expdp every day as a secondary backup of our lower
environment  metadata and it works very well.  But it's small enough to
withstand not being compressed until after it's done.

p.s.  If one had time to spare, I'd bet a well-placed strace could shed some
light on the FIFO pipe issue...
