For brain dead x server problems, I've had good luck installing via VNC.  Just 
a thought.  krdc
works flawlessly from linux.  Haven't tried it via the vncviewer from windows 
though I would expect
it to work the same.

I had the same problem running an X server with xinit. to fix it i just had to
step the mouse over the field move it away of the window, and back to the
window and then it became active... weird huh?? heheh
