Mike,
I was DBA on a project last year that used Datastage. They requested select on
dba_extents and on some other views as well (can't remember which ones though).
From memory the "reason" was something to do with the Parallel Extender part of
the product which does lots of processing in parallel and uses information in
dba_extents to help determine the number of parallel streams it will use to
access a particular table.
How much real-value Datastage gains by looking at dba_extents is doubtful but
it's probably true that it won't work without the select privilege.
