add to that the hard parsing of all queries again, warming the caches back
up, the chance the database wont come back, kicking off any valid users,
restarting apps which have a connection pool, stopping any batch processes
and it doesnt become an exicting prospect anymore

I always liked it, consider the rollback. But there is nothing faster than shutdown abort. Oracle will be doing some recovery on the way up, then you have the second shutdown/startup.
