I think by now it's safe to say that there is no rolling upgrade in Oracle.

The work involved in rewriting Oracle's source code to allow for upgrades of the dictionary (excellent point made by another member of the list) and/or the SGA structures would be Herculian.

Remember that in science one - one - counter example is enough to prove something wrong. There will always be cases where rolling upgrades are not possible in Oracle installations.

In fact, Oracle is lying about this, let's just face it. It's marketing, they're mad if they're told that they're lying, and lots of people get scared when marketing gets mad.

But RU's are not there. They might - might - be available in one Oracle product: Rdb.

But I'm not even sure about that.
