That is apparently 'old knowledge'. IIRC it used to work that way.
8i perhaps?  Sometimes it's difficult to remember what stuff to forget.  :)

I was just playing with this again, as I need to do something similar here
( oops, we let our database grow to 800g, and now we only need 50g,
  can you help? )

I ran the same tests in 9i, only this time the datafile could be shrunk
to 512k after dropping the tables, which is how it should work.

If you can spot an error in the test scenario I provided in my previous
post, please feel free to share it.  I just look again, and still don't
see the problem.
