This is RH 5. I'm pretty sure this is not a RH boot issue but rather a VMWare 
issue.
I'll try the boot with the media/rescue option and see what happens tonight.

Can you try to boot the VM with the RHEL media and rescue
option?

If you succeed in this step, maybe the /var/log/boot.log contains some 
information.

What version of RHEL are you using?
