Actually, that is not true. You can upgrade CRS ("grid") to 11.2.0.4 or even
12.1.0.2 and leave the database as is.
Of course, one would have to question why leave the database on an
unsupported release, but it is doable.

Good catch Mladen. Actually there is a good reason to do this - space.
You can upgrade GI, wait a few days to make sure everything looks
good, then cleanup the old GI home before installing the new DB home.
