It isn't default, but is useful when working around an ODBC driver bug (Getting Junk Characters in Drop Down List for TNS Service Name [ID 882357.1]). I'm not sure where else it's useful, but that's how I learned about it. Thanks, T. Is this a default setting at install for 10g? -----Original Message----- From: TJ Kiernan [mailto:tkiernan@xxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, August 21, 2012 10:13 AM To: Storey, Robert (DCSO); paul.baumgartel@xxxxxxx; oracle-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Cc: TJ Kiernan Subject: RE: Tnsnames mystery If I recall correctly, TNS_ADMIN can also be set in the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\KEY_homename), which probably did not get cleaned out with the uninstall. I would expect that your search for TNSNAMES.ora would have turned up another file, unless there's a hidden version of the file somewhere. Thanks, T. I wiped oracle off a client machine and reinstalled the 10g client. I copied over a fresh copy of a tnsnames.ora file that has all our client services with their new IP's. However, when I tnsping one of the services, I am getting IP address that were in the OLD tnsnames file. I did a file search on the machine and found no additional copies (other than the sample directory) of the tnsnames.ora file. Where would it be getting the OLD service information from? I searched the registry and did not find it. The Tnsping file shows that it is going to the correct sql home.
