In Joel's defense, I've seen customers who insist on their own (usually 
SAN or snapshot-based) backup method and absolutely refuse to use RMAN.

In one case a few years back, the customer refused to *allow* RMAN.

Politics, in a tech environment, is always curiously fun, in an insane 
kind of way.
