RMAN in version 9i is very easy to set up. It supports defaults,
and you don't have to put tablespaces in the backup mode (RMAN
locks block while copying. It uses LARGE_POOL, so if you plan on
using RMAN, configure LARGE_POOL). Database backup is done by using
very cryptic and unclear command "BACKUP DATABASE". Once you set
things up, they seldomly require any change. If you plan to backup
only a few databases, then you can use control file as a repository.
If you have more work to do, build yourself a catalog database. I've
set it to work on Solaris with Networker 5 and it wasn't a problem.
I know that Networker works on AIX. So do NetBackup and Omnibackup.
The oracle "modules" (media libraries) come from the vendor and, in
case of Legato Systems, they were far from free. I'm not sure about the
pricing for NetBackup, Omnibackup or IBM ("Tivoli"). Everything you need
about RMAN can be found in the holly bible of RMAN. ("Oracle9i RMAN
Backup & Recovery" by Robert Freeman ). Speaking of Robert Freeman, he
has been conspicuously absent from this list, and I believe that he's up
to something bad, like a new book.
