The point about clustering and patching is well-taken, though.  What do
you do if you need to patch one instance separately from the others, for
whatever reason?

Sounds like a SAP installation to me.  Tell consultant to go fly a kite.
One set of binaries, 5 instances out of the same home.  No options.
