RE: RMAN without a repository and a total site loss

Do this now:
 
rman target / nocatalog;
RMAN> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
 
And later, when you need to restore:
 
RMAN> set dbid . . .;
RMAN> restore controlfile from autobackup;
