For Disaster Recovery we USUALLY restore the RMAN catalog. It is not
*required* but certainly makes the job a lot simpler. First of all, you
don't actually need to know where the controlfile is backed up, which really
helps if you don't have a controlfile autobackup or sensible logs...
However, if you manage to recover the controlfile (and I mean recover and
not RECREATE from trace) then you have the information of at least the
latest backup (how far back depends on the controfile record keep time
parameter).
