I'm not sure on the answers to your exact questions, but I can tell you the way
we handle this situation here is like this:
1) I run "restore database preview" to identify the required images (never
tried the recall option)
2) I send the list of required backup images to the Netbackup Admin team
3) They identify what tapes are required and then recall them from offsite
if necessary
I've asked our Netbackup admins for some more detail on how they identify the
tapes and will let you know when I hear back.
