Not that I argue about the issue of quality but who said that those people are 
tired at work? Or even that they code those large parts *after* working hours?
 
BTW: may be it's a known fact but I've personally red it in Microsoft's 
employee's blog. If my memory doesn't fail me in details there was some bug in 
open source implementation of tcp/ip stack(was it Berkley?) for 10 or so years 
until someone performed a formal verification (this someone could have been in 
his PhD studies) and found this bug. 10 years of theoretical possibility to 
read every line of the code have passed until that moment .
