Postgres getting better in that regard, still not as convenient/advanced as Oracle, but it definitely moves in the right direction. AUTO_EXPLAIN extension is one of the tools that could be used for sql tracing/profiling. As for Stonebrake, he hasn't been associated with Postgres for many years. Current group of developers (hackers) is very solid.
