I've always thought that the archivelog backup should be the default condition
with a switch to turn it off. Maybe it's a programitic constraint since the
same command (backup database) is used for both ARCHIVELOG and NOARCHIVELOG
mode backups.

Yes, I like my backups to be recoverable J I was just pointing out the caveat
that they’re not included if you just run “backup database”. It seems to me
that it would be a good idea to make the backup command include archivelogs by
default and only have an option to exclude them if desired for some reason –
maybe in 12x.
