Sandra, both mySQL and PostgreSQL came bundled on our SuSe distribution when we installed Linux on a mainframe. You might want to ask your administrators to check their distribution as I think Red Hat also includes the software on their CD distribution probably as optional components. Worth a look anyway. -- Mark D Powell -- Phone (313) 592-5148 -----Original Message----- From: oracle-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:oracle-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of James Foronda Sent: Monday, October 02, 2006 11:48 AM Cc: oracle-l Subject: Re: Oracle vs SQL Server Sandra, Sandra Becker wrote: > I didn't see where > PostgreSQL was available for Linux and our sys admins don't seem eager > to make any changes. This is just FYI... If PostgreSQL is in your radar, please note that PostgreSQL comes bundled with Solaris 10 and that you can get commercial support from Sun. Sun has hired Josh Berkus, one of the core PostgreSQL developers to help in this effort: http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/database/soup/archives/sun-postgresql-and-whe re-the-heck-ive-been-10137 One big difference between PostgreSQL on Solaris on that of other platforms is that the Solaris release of PostgreSQL contains Solaris DTrace probes to make it more observable.
