It's a copy of the CD on one of our filers, NFS mounted to the server
that I'm doing the install on. (Makes it easier than shuffling CDs,
particularly since the sys admins and the data center sit in a building
several miles from me.)

I don't get it....

Oh well.....

I just replaced the '!' with a '#' for the install. After it's done,
I'll log in and do ALTER USER to change them all back to the password I
want.....

Are you installing from CD? Is it the same CD you used before? Oracle
makes little un-announced changes in the code on the CDs to distribute
'stealth fixes' :-). If you answered yes to the first two questions,
check the little numbers imprinted on the inside of the CD to see if
they are the same. If not, it may be different source code. Of course,
if you answered No to both of the first two questions, then I got
nothin!

So, I'm installing the 10gR2 App Server, and I get to the window where
you define passwords for SYS, SYSTEM, SYSMAN, and DBSNMP.

So, I type in our standard passwords for each of the accounts, and I
get:

Password may contain Alphanumeric, underscore (_), dollar ($), or pound
(#) characters only: SYS.
Password may contain Alphanumeric, underscore (_), dollar ($), or pound
(#) characters only: SYSTEM.
Password may contain Alphanumeric, underscore (_), dollar ($), or pound
(#) characters only: SYSMAN.
Password may contain Alphanumeric, underscore (_), dollar ($), or pound
(#) characters only: DBSNMP.

Now, this is the exact same software I installed a couple of weeks ago,
with the same standard passwords, and there was no problem. (Our
standard passwords contain an exclamation point(!).)

I don't get it.....how did it work two weeks ago, and choke now....?

Sigh....I *love* Oracle....;-)
