We've had two X4s and two X5s installed and configured by Oracle techs per our
specs (filling out their data sheets) in our two data centers. ODAs are NOT
plug-and-play. It took one full day for each ODA, with two techs working on
each. We have the virtualized setup on all but no RAC on any. I'd highly
recommend getting Oracle to do the installation/configuration so you have some
assurance it's done right.
We do our own patching and have found that ODA-knowledgeable MOS folks are few
and far between. It's taken days, weeks, even months to get answers about
patching and/or configuration problems. Most of them have Exadata experience,
but there's a lot of stuff you can do on Exadata that's not allowed on ODAs.
ODA-specific MOS docs are also hard to find.
Overall, we're very happy with our ODAs. Performance is great and, once you get
the kinks worked out, patching is straightforward.

Subject: Oracle Database Appliance slightly off topic
My apologies up front, I would not normally ask this question of the
list, however; we are responding to an RFP for work in Hawaii that has a
very short response time. Once the contract is awarded in the on Sept
30, I will also find an engineer to do the work.
I need to know what is the level of effort (number of hours involved) to
setup Oracle Database Appliance, Configure Oracle Virtual Machines,
Oracle two node RAC once all the configuration data is gathered. Other
question is, is the Oracle Database Appliance Platinum support treated
the same as Exadata where Oracle support applies patches? From all my
current reading, ODM seems to be close to plug and play; but as we all
know, the devil is in the details.
The second part of my issue is, what technical questions should I ask
when I make the move to hire an engineer.
Again my apologies if this is not the right forum, I would do normally
do more research and/or send myself to class to gather this knowledge.
