There has been a lot of debate about what will happen.

Suggestions have included that 12c will have an infinite number of releases (12.1, 12.2, 12.3 ...) - infinite being limited to 12

12cR2 is not scheduled for 2015, so doubtful that that would be the target name. Indeed, speculation has it that 12.2 will be out around CY2016H1 according to http://prsync.com/oracle/when-will-oracle-database--getting-released-637366/ ... plus the usual delays. For me, that's likely close to retirement date ;-)

However, given that Oracle applications, such as Oracle Retail, have version 13.1 already released, it may become a non-issue.
